If a Tooth Is Knocked Out

For an adult permanent tooth, do this straight away and call us on the way:

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root
  • Rinse gently with milk or water if it is dirty
  • Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue
  • If you can, place it back in the socket and bite on a cloth
  • If not, keep it in milk and bring it with you

Do not attempt to reinsert a child’s baby tooth. If the injury involved a blow to the head, or there is loss of consciousness, confusion, or vomiting, treat it as a head injury and go to the emergency room first.
